How to tie a head wrap: Video tutorials

When I found out that I was going to have to undergo chemotherapy and that my hair was going to fall out, it didn’t really bother me. I never had a breakdown or felt bad that it was all going away. I kind of wanted to embrace it. I figured this would be an opportunity to try new things with my appearance.

At first, I didn’t think that I even wanted a wig, but my mind was changed after one of the oncologists that we met with pointed out why I should consider getting a wig. He said, “Let’s say the two of you just want to go out to dinner sometime and not be bothered with the looks or people feeling bad for you”. I could see how it might be nice to just be normal again. I do like the wig and feel it looks very natural. It’s just that sometimes it can be a little itchy and warm.

I have also been given a number of cute hats and caps. When I had hair I used to wear hats while doing yard work, and once in awhile a cap while bike riding, but that was about it. I did get a scarf from a friend and I didn’t know really how to style it or tie it. All I knew was the regular babushka way, like when my mom would have her hair in curlers. Or the house painter, do-rag style. I wanted something a little more stylish.

I kind of feel sorry for all of you people out there with hair. Being bald gives me a blank canvass to play with. I get to have a different head look at various points of the day without having my hair getting in the way. I have been having so much fun with something I had never given much thought to.

I know that if there is ever anything that you want to know how to do, you can usually find a video tutorial on YouTube. I found quite a few very helpful demonstrations. Here are just a couple of them:

These videos helped me come up with the head wraps that I have modeled in my photos below.

Hi Amy – I can see how the head wraps, hats, wigs offer a new dimension to fashion. I still think the Hijabs would be a blast too. Check out this site: http://stylishmuslimah.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Look at the beautiful Hijabs. The lace one near the bottom is so elegant. I love the trousers on this site too, especially the all gray look with the cap and scarf.

    Thanks for sharing!!!
    Love ya!

I love the Hijabs Karen. It’s funny, the other day I saw a young girl at the bus stop near the hospital wearing a Hijab and I thought yeah I could maybe do that as well. Thanks for the link, I do like the gray trousers on the site very cute.

Yeah Linda, YouTube is sorta like a little university for how to do things. :)

So, I have this 2010 Napoleon Hill Nuggets of Gold Day by Day calendar on my desk which provides inspiration when I need it. (I know, right?) Last week I found a quote I love, (which just so happens to be Nov. 17th) and set it for this week:

“Make yourself understand that it isn’t defeat which whips you, but your mental attitude toward it, and then train yourself to look for the seed of equivalent benefit in each defeat which may come your way.”

I looked back at that after I read your post and half expected it to go on and say, “Like my friend, Amy, who has created some kick ass head fashion and rocks it like a true Gaga while most of you are fussing with spit ends! C’mon people – take note of this inspiration – where do you think I get it from?!” – Napoleon

I LOVE it Amy! This could be your new thing to create and sell on ETSY. A little fringe, some bling, some fur. Maybe even a little monogram or symbol or charm. Now I’m getting excited and will probably be out scarf hunting at lunch! Need to shed the 50 something /vanilla/just-another-face-in-the-crowd look. Well, and the hair! Thanks!
